Light Shapes Art
I've always been a creator.
Photography is simply the latest expression of something that's been true my entire life. Whether I was designing software, leading engineering organizations, building a company, learning an instrument, painting, growing bonsai, or creating terrariums, I've always been happiest learning a difficult craft and slowly getting better at it.
I've never believed that creativity belongs to artists alone. Engineers solve problems creatively. Musicians communicate through sound. Gardeners shape living things. Photographers work with light, time, patience, and observation. To me, they're all expressions of the same instinct: making something meaningful and beautiful.
I divide my time between the Pacific Northwest and the Sea of Cortez, two places that constantly remind me how different nature can be. One offers fog, forests, mountains, and quiet lakes. The other offers desert, islands, brilliant light, and an astonishing diversity of birds and marine life. Together they have shaped the way I see.
I'm drawn to quiet subjects rather than dramatic ones. Solitary birds. Mist drifting through trees. Reflections on calm water. Empty beaches. Sailboats disappearing into fog. I find beauty in moments that are easy to miss because they don't ask for attention. I enjoy slowing down long enough to notice subtle relationships between light, shape, color, texture, and atmosphere. Sometimes the difference between an ordinary photograph and one that resonates is simply the willingness to wait.
My engineering background influences how I photograph. I enjoy understanding why an image works, studying composition, refining technique, and continually improving. But technical excellence is never the goal by itself. Technique matters because it helps remove distractions, allowing the emotion of the scene to come through.
I hope my photographs create spaces of calm and joy. Modern life is full of urgency and noise. I want my work to invite people to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with places that feel timeless.
I don't think of photography as collecting beautiful places. I think of it as preserving moments that would otherwise disappear forever. Every photograph is an attempt to share not just what I saw, but what I felt standing there.
